Privacy Policy
Last updated:
This policy explains what information is processed when you use thewitchermap.com, why, and the choices you have. In short: we do not ask for an account, your map progress stays in your browser, and any advertising on the site is provided by third parties described below.
Who we are
The Witcher Map (thewitchermap.com) is an independent fan website. In this policy, "we", "us" and "our" refer to the operator of the site. You can contact us about privacy at any time at [email protected].
Information we do not collect
We do not ask you to create an account, and we do not collect your name, address or payment details. We use Google Analytics to measure how the site is used, as described below, and we do not sell personal information.
Data stored on your device
To remember your progress, the site stores a small amount of data in your browser’s local storage: the markers you mark as found, your selected categories, the "hide found markers" setting and the names of your playthroughs. This data never leaves your device unless you choose to export it as a file. You can delete it at any time by clearing the site data in your browser settings or with the "Reset this map" button.
If you install the site as an app or use it offline, your browser also keeps a cached copy of pages, map tiles and images on your device so they load without a connection.
Hosting and server logs
The site is served by Cloudflare. When your browser requests a page, Cloudflare processes technical information such as your IP address, browser type, the page requested and the time of the request. This is necessary to deliver the site, keep it secure and protect it against abuse. Cloudflare handles this data under its own privacy policy, and we do not use it to identify you.
Analytics
We use Google Analytics 4, a service of Google, to understand how visitors use the site: which pages and maps are opened, how long visits last, which site sent you here, and general information such as your country, device type and browser. Google Analytics uses cookies (such as _ga) and similar technologies, and Google Analytics 4 does not log or store IP addresses. We look at this information only in aggregate, to improve the maps and fix problems.
If you are in the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom or Switzerland, analytics cookies stay off by default unless you consent, and Google only receives cookieless measurement pings. Wherever you are, you can opt out with the Google Analytics opt-out browser add-on (tools.google.com/dlpage/gaoptout) or by blocking cookies for this site in your browser. Google processes this data under its own privacy policy (policies.google.com/privacy).
Cookies and advertising
Apart from the Google Analytics cookies described above, we do not set cookies ourselves. To keep the site free, it may display advertising provided by Google AdSense. When ads are shown, Google and its partners may use cookies, web beacons and similar technologies to serve ads, limit how often you see an ad, measure performance and, where permitted, show ads based on your previous visits to this and other websites.
- Third-party vendors, including Google, use cookies to serve ads based on your prior visits to this website or other websites.
- Google’s use of advertising cookies enables it and its partners to serve ads to you based on your visits to this site and/or other sites on the internet.
- You can opt out of personalized advertising by visiting Google Ads Settings (adssettings.google.com). You can also opt out of some third-party vendors’ use of cookies for personalized advertising at www.aboutads.info/choices or www.youronlinechoices.eu.
- Learn more about how Google uses information from sites that use its services at policies.google.com/technologies/partner-sites.
If you are in the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom or Switzerland, you will be asked for your consent before personalized ads or non-essential cookies are used, through a consent message managed by Google. You can change your choice at any time from the privacy link in that message. If you do not consent, you may still see non-personalized ads.
Children’s privacy
The site is meant for a general audience interested in The Witcher games and books. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13 (or under 16 in the European Union). If you believe a child has sent us personal information, contact us and we will delete it.
Your rights
Depending on where you live, you may have the right to access, correct or delete personal information about you, to object to or restrict its processing, and to withdraw consent. Because we hold almost no personal data, most requests can be handled by clearing your browser data or changing your ad choices as described above. For anything else, email us and we will respond within 30 days.
If you are a California resident, we do not sell your personal information as defined by the CCPA. You can still limit how advertising partners use your data through the opt-out links above.
Emails you send us
If you write to us, we receive your email address and the content of your message. We use them only to reply and keep a record of the conversation, and we delete old messages when they are no longer needed.
Links to other websites
Pages on this site link to other websites, such as the open-source projects we credit. We are not responsible for their content or privacy practices, so please review their policies when you visit them.
Changes to this policy
We may update this policy when the site or the law changes, for example if we add a new service. The date at the top of this page shows when it was last updated. Significant changes will be highlighted on this page.
